From a personal tool to a global platform
"The best products are born from personal frustration."
Like many language learners, I spent years trying different apps, methods, and systems. I used popular language learning platforms, tried various flashcard apps, and experimented with different techniques. Some worked well, others didn't, but there was always something missing.
The turning point came when I decided to learn a specific language that wasn't well-supported by mainstream platforms. I searched everywhere—Duolingo, Babbel, Memrise—but couldn't find quality resources for this particular language. The few options available were either outdated, poorly designed, or simply didn't match my learning style.
That's when I realized: I needed to build my own tool.
I started with a simple desktop application—just for myself. It was basic: create flashcards, review them, track progress. Nothing fancy, but it worked. More importantly, it was mine. I could customize it exactly how I wanted, add the content I needed, and learn at my own pace.
For months, this little app was my daily companion. I added features as I needed them, refined the interface, and gradually built up my vocabulary. It wasn't perfect, but it was effective.
As I dove deeper into learning science, I discovered spaced repetition and the FSRS algorithm. This was a game-changer. I realized my simple app could be so much more powerful if it used scientifically-proven scheduling algorithms.
I spent weeks studying the research, understanding how memory works, and implementing FSRS. The results were immediate—I was learning faster and remembering more with less effort. This wasn't just a tool anymore; it was becoming something special.
Creating flashcards manually was time-consuming. When AI language models became accessible, I saw an opportunity. What if the app could generate flashcards automatically from YouTube videos, articles, or just topics I wanted to learn?
I integrated AI-powered content generation, translation, and voice synthesis. Suddenly, creating comprehensive study materials took minutes instead of hours. The app was evolving beyond my original vision.
I wanted to study on the go—during commutes, in waiting rooms, anywhere. The desktop app wasn't enough anymore. I needed mobile versions for iOS and Android, with full synchronization across devices.
This was the biggest technical challenge yet. Building native mobile apps, implementing cloud sync, ensuring data security—it was a massive undertaking. But seeing my flashcards seamlessly sync between my computer and phone made it all worthwhile.
Friends and family started asking to use my app. Then friends of friends. I realized this tool that had helped me so much could help others too. What started as a personal project was becoming something bigger—a platform that could make language learning accessible and effective for everyone.
That's when Grafoxi was truly born—not just as an app, but as a mission to help people connect across languages and cultures.
Throughout this journey, certain principles have guided every decision:
Today, Grafoxi is available on iOS, with Android and web versions coming soon. Thousands of learners use it daily to master languages, prepare for exams, and expand their knowledge.
But we're just getting started. The roadmap includes:
What started as a simple desktop app for learning one obscure language has become a comprehensive platform used worldwide. And the journey continues.
Building Grafoxi has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life. There were countless late nights, frustrating bugs, and moments of doubt. But every time I receive a message from someone who finally understood a conversation in their target language, or passed an exam they were worried about, or connected with someone they couldn't have talked to before—it makes everything worthwhile.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Whether you're a long-time user or just discovering Grafoxi, you're helping build something meaningful. Together, we're breaking down language barriers and bringing the world a little closer.
